Today marks the official start of Training Camp for the Washington Redskins here in RVA.

Earlier this afternoon, players completed their annual conditioning tests and the first practice is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Jay Gruden also addressed for the media for the first time at Training Camp this year:

As expected, Gruden did not elaborate much on certain situations, including that of Trent Williams.

However, he did have a few comments on the matter. Here are some of my takeaways from Gruden's first presser of the 2019 season:

  • Trent Williams: Again, Gruden didn't say much about Trent's contract situation, which is what we all figured would happen. Gruden noted that he and Trent have not been in contact but did say that he believes the Redskins' front office has been in touch with him. Gruden was asked on two separate occasions if he took what Trent was doing personally considering Williams has been with the Redskins for Gruden's entire tenure. Gruden of course said no, and went on to detail how you shouldn't take anything personal in this business. Finally, Gruden said he expects Trent to report "sooner rather than later." We'll see...
  • Derrius Guice: After an injury cut his rookie season short, Guice's injury a few weeks ago put a scare into a lot of Redskins fans. Well, those fans don't need to worry about this particular injury. Gruden said that Guice is "all clear" and simply "tweaked his hammy" after a practice earlier this spring. They expect him to participate at 100% when practice begins tomorrow.
  • Brandon Scherff: Regarding Scherff's contract situation, Gruden again didn't have much to say other than they hope to get him back long-term and that it's up to the front office to get that done. However, Gruden did say that he thinks Scherff is "in the best shape of his life" entering camp.
  • QB Battle: Gruden said that it could come down to the Saturday before they play the Eagles that a decision could be made. I'm sure it won't take quite that long, but Gruden said he's going to divide the snaps as evenly as possible between rookie Dwayne Haskins and veteran Colt McCoy. Speaking of Colt...
  • Colt McCoy: Gruden said that despite the McCoy's broken leg and the subsequent surgeries that followed, he is at 100% heading into camp; a somewhat surprising development.
  • Linebackers: Mason Foster was cut by the Redskins yesterday despite leading the team in tackles last year. Gruden didn't go into much detail on the topic but said he is happy with the unit's depth.
  • Kyshoen Jarrett: For all you Hokies out there, Gruden had a lot of good things to say about the addition of Kyshoen Jarrett to the coaching staff. Gruden said they welcomed him back with open arms and they believe he ascend through the coaching ranks quickly.
  • Montez Sweat: Despite a scare before the NFL Draft where Sweat was reportedly diagnosed with heart condition, he is not on the Physically Unable to Perform list and will be a full-go for Training Camp. Gruden also noted that Sweat looks "fast." I'm excited to see how they use him.

With practice getting underway tomorrow, we'll be hearing much more from Jay Gruden over the next month. That will provide us with more answers to some of the questions we have at the start of camp.
