Earlier today, Virginia Tech head basketball coach Buzz Williams released a statement regarding the status of redshirt senior Ty Outlaw.

We now know that Outlaw will play in the Sweet 16 tomorrow night against number one overall seed Duke up in Washington, D.C.

So, what does it mean?

Well, there's no need to complicate things. Outlaw is one of Virginia Tech's best shooters. To take down the highest seed in this year's NCAA tournament, the Hokies will need to knock down their outside shots. In 34 games this season, Outlaw is shooting 45.6% from beyond the arc. That's the highest percentage of anyone on Virginia Tech and it's not close.

Outlaw has started both games for the Hokies in this year's NCAA Tournament.

In the Round of 64 game against Saint Louis, Outlaw scored just 7 points in 27 minutes of action after getting into some early foul trouble. In the Round of 32 game against Liberty, he was much more involved notching a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Though his two of six shooting night from downtown was well below his season average, Outlaw was able to provide support for the Hokies in other ways.

That's where Outlaw will need to come up big for Virginia Tech against Duke tomorrow night. As much as the Hokies will need his 3-point shots to be falling, Outlaw will be counted on to grab rebounds, and will likely be tasked with guarding impending NBA lottery pick Zion Williamson for at least part of the game.

The Hokies are now at full strength heading into a matchup with a team they know very well. If Virginia Tech is to pull off this upset in front of what's expected to be a Virginia Tech-dominant crowd, Ty Outlaw will have played a significant role in getting the job done.
