This weekend, the Richmond high school football family lost coach Gary Chilcoat.  He passed away after a valiant battle with cancer.  Chilcoat was the head coach at Varina from 1999 until 2007, compiling a record of 91-14.  in 1999, the Blue Devils were the state runner-up.  After that he worked as the defensive coordinator at Deep Run, Highland Springs, Henrico and Godwin.

He could really coach some defense, but those who knew him best spoke more of his passion, toughness, work ethic, character and attention to detail.  Back in January, I was honored to oversee a tribute to Coach Chilcoat at the All-Metro Banquet and as you can see below, Coach Criz and I both got a chance to spend some time with him.

Back in October on the Thursday High School Walk-Thru, Coach Criz and I did a segment about Coach Chilcoat with former Varina assistant and current UVa Blanda Wolfe.  Here is that segment.

Over the years, Coach Criz and I got to know Coach and his wife Janice.  We remember this momemt with Janice fondly on the sidelines before a 2017 playoff game.

Love and prayers to Janice, Amanda, and the whole Chilcoat family
