Big River Rivalry

The Big River Rivalry All-Star was played on Saturday and it was a thriller with the South beating the North 20-19.  Congrats to Roemell Garcia from Manchester and Aarek Thomas from John Marshall, who were named the game's MVPs. 

After the game, Gary Hess and Gary Criswell were at The Sports Page in Ashland for Season Ending Postgame Extra.  They recap the Big River Rivalry and wrap up another great season of high school football in the 804.

Time now to name the Hungerford Heating and Cooling Hot player of the week in local high school football.  This week’s winner is Trey Henderson from Hopewell, who grabs the honor for the 3td time this year.  He had 211 yards and 3 touchdowns on 21 carries and an interception on defense as the Blue Devils rallied for a 35-28 win over Goochland in the Division 3 state semifinals.

Here is the Thursday High School Walk-Thru for December 5th.  Gary Hess and Gary Criswell preview the state semis with Ken Wakefield from PH, TJ coach PJ Adams, Goochland's Alex Fruth, coach Ricky Irby of Hopewell and Varina's Stu Brown.  They also chatted with Larry Rubama from the Virginian Pilot with insight on Varina's opponent Maury and Lake Taylor who is taking on Patrick Henry


 





Time now to name the Hungerford Heating and Cooling Hot player of the week in local high school football.  This week’s winner is Ron Rhone from Thomas Jefferson.  He stepped at quarterback for the injured Jaylen Tyler and led the Vikings to a 30-28 win over King William in the Region 2A title game.  Rhone completed 13 of 20 passes for 239 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for a score as T-J claimed its’ 1st ever regional championship in the 90 year history of the school.

Time now to name the Hungerford Heating and Cooling Hot player of the week in local high school football.  This week’s winner is Varina two-way standout Barry Hill.  He caught 2 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown, and had 4 interceptions on defense as the Blue Devils upset Highland Springs 27-21, avenging a 27-20 loss 2 weeks ago and in the process advancing to the Region 5B championship game.  The loss ended the Springers 40-game win streak and dashed their hopes for a 5th straight state title.

Time now to name the Hungerford Heating and Cooling Hot player of the week in local high school football.  This week the winner is Robert Barlow from Dinwiddie.  He had a huge game as the 7th seeded Generals upset 2nd seed Monacan 49-27 in the first round of the Region 4B playoffs.  The standout runner had 27 carries for 279 yards and 7 touchdowns.  He also caught 2 passes for 44 yards and had an interception on defense.

Time now to name the Hungerford Heating and Cooling Hot player of the week in local high school football.  This week’s winner is quarterback Jasiah Williams from Thomas Dale, who had a huge game in the Knights 46-44 win at Dinwiddie.  Williams was 12 for 23 for 249 yards and 4 touchdowns, plus he rushed 17 times for 90 yards and 2 more scores.  In addition he returned a blocked field goal 88 yards for a 7th touchdown.

Time now to name the Hungerford Heating and Cooling Hot player of the week in local high school football.  This week’s honoree is Isiah Paige from Varina.  He made an impact in all three phases as the Blue Devils beat Henrico 35 to 7.  Paige ran 6 times for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns and caught 4 passes for 118 yards and 1 score.  On defense he had 6 tackles, 4 pass break-ups and a forced fumble.  Also his 32 yards kickoff return to open the 2nd half set up another touchdown.

Time now to name the Hungerford Heating and Cooling Hot player of the week in local high school football.  This week the honor goes to Tyler Warren from Atlee.  Even though the Raiders lost to Henrico, he accounted for 480 yards of offense.  The Penn State commit was 14 of 25 for 268 yards and 2 touchdown plus he ran 19 times for 212 yards and a score.  In addition he blocked a punt and had a 52 yard punt.

Congrats to co-ESP players of the week are D’Vonte Waller from Highland Springs and Manchester’s KJ McNeil.  Waller was 16 for 27 for 276 yards and 2 touchdowns leading the Springers to a 37-26 win over Stone Bridge and their 4th straight Division 5 state championship.  McNeil was like a Swiss-army knife as the Lancers dominated Freedom of Woodbridge 49-7 for the Division 6 state title.  He had 5 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown, but also ran for a score and threw a 27-yard TD pass.  On defense he had 5 tackles, a sack and an interception.  Plus he has one punt return for 23 yards.

Congats to ESP players of the week Brendon Clark from Manchester and Tremayne Talbert from Highland Springs.  Clark was 11 for 17 for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns and had a 27-yard touchdown run as the Lancers handled Ocean Lakes 42-3 in the Division 6 state semifinals.  Talbert had a 100 yard punt return for a touchdown, a 99 yard kickoff return for a score, and caught a 48 yard touchdown pass as the Springers took care of Maury 71-28 in the Division 5 state semis.

Congrats to ESP player of the week Jay Woolfolk from Benedictine.  The standout sophomore quarterback accounted for all 6 touchdowns in the Cadets 42-6 win over St Christopher’s in the first round of the VISAA Division 1 playoffs.  He was 12 for 20 for 135 yards and 3 touchdowns passing and ran 15 times for 217 yards and 3 more scores.  Plus he had an interception on defense.
